I still remember words from one soldier who said that he would sacrifice his own life to save the lives of four or five people that could potentially be killed by a landmine. This illustrates the deminers’ unerring courage and bravery.
This sculpture illustrates the positive result after land has been cleared of mines. Hope and development replace fear and tragedy which used to haunt the people. Agricultural and agro-industrial crops blossom with good yields that improve the status of the people’s economy. Infrastructure such as schools, roads and hospitals make the living condition of the people better.
The rice grain represents agriculture. The stem shows development and the yellow color represents the area cleared from mines. The five leaves illustrate the current development from small to giant steps. More importantly, this sculpture is a message that land without mines will enable growth and development. No mine clearance, no development is possible. Cambodia needs a prolonged mine clearance programme so we can complete the task and achieve our economic potential.
